Today's word: Tandem, Transgression, Extort, Grueling, Detain
1.      Tandem:
Sometime you might say that entertainment and work should go in tandem. You want both things and do not want lose any of the things. You want to enjoy weekend with your family and friends at party, spend summer holiday travelling to new places and at the same time you need to do job to earn money.

2.      Transgression:
Sometime people cross the boundary of rules of society, the guidelines of morality and do egregiously bad thing. This bad thing is what we call transgression
Example:   Dennis Hasssen is sorry for past transgression (NY times)
Note: In Nepali we say हर्कत  as a meaning for transgression

3.     Extort:
In a movie we see a people who abduct a child  and ask for money, They say something like this, "GIVE ME FIVE MILLION DOLLAR BY THREE DAYS OTHERWISE YOU WILL LOSE YOU SON"  These people are trying to obtain something (money ) by intimidation. This is what we say extort
Example: They extorted money from the parents by threatening to kill their little child

4.      Grueling:
Have you ever done job? You have to fulfill much of the responsibility that you are assigned. You have to give effort physically and mentally, for the whole day. After you returned from your job, you are completely exhausted. We can say this job as grueling. Or anything that takes you to the point of exhaustion is grueling task
Example: The people who do not like company's grueling atmosphere are free to work elsewhere

5.      Detain:
Police take suspect in control and carry out investigation. Thus detain is something like Taking into confinement
Example: The man who was suspected to be involved in the Brussels attack was detained  by Brussels’s police and investigation is going on

Detain also sometime means to delay, stop /halt
